I basically spent two months thinking, 'How can I get away from the most major aspect of his description- his appearance? As it is written from Bella's erspective, she describes him in this obsessively lustful way, she does not see a single flaw in him at all. It's a very traditional aspect of first or young love. So, it took me ages to think of it, but it ended up being really simple: if you are in love with someone, you can't see any flaw in the other person, So I finally figured out that I didn't have to play the most beautiful man on the planet, but just play a man in love.
What attracted you to the role of Edward?
Edward is a guy whom so many people love, but he's essentially self-hating and prone to being self-destructive. And that's very typical thing for guys to go through- when you love something so much that you just start compulsively destroying it because you think you're not good enough. It's very tragic story.
Have you ever loved someone like that?
Not really, but I understand it. The self-destruction that's prevalent in New Moon is much clearer to me than the emotions in Twilight, whick is all about the freedom of finding your first love, and pure joyousness. I guess I'm a more cynical person than Edward is.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
Up until I was 12, my sisters used to dress me up as a girl and introduce me as 'Claudia'! Twelve was a turning point as I moved to a mixed school and then I became cool and discovered hair gel.
And the signature hair secret is...
I just use water. No one ever believes me, but it's true.
Are you still playing music?
Sure! I played a lot of music in London and I always remember those days when I took a ride in my car and thinking how being a musician was the coolest job in the world. I imagined myself playing in restuarants by the beach, with sunsets next to the ocean. I play the piano since I was five, so music is part of who I am.
Speaking of Edward, what do you think you have in common with him?
I don’t know. I’m very sensitive and shy. I have supernatural powers too (laughs). No, i wish I did. But I’m too normal.
